GLBT Challenge 2011

Welcome to the GLBT Challenge 2011!
The Challenge that Dare Not Speak its Name...

Rules/Guidelines:

The basic idea of this challenge is to read books about GLBT topics and/or by GLBT authors.

The challenge runs year-round as usual, but instead of requiring a certain number of books, this year I'm handling this challenge in a more do-it-yourself sort of fashion. You set your own goal. It doesn't matter if that goal is 1 book, 10 books, a percentage of your books, or to read from various age groups/genres. Your goal is completely up to you. Design this the way you want. Make it work for you. The important thing here is simply to get us reading GLBT lit.

You don't need to choose your books right away, and they can change at any time. Overlaps with other challenges are fine.

In January, I will put up a review linky. Those links help serve as a reference for others. They are also how I will track participants for the end of year prize drawing. For each book you review and link up, the greater your chance will be at winning. At the end of 2011, I will use random.org to select one participant - from the review linky - to win a book of their choice (up to $20) from the Book Depository.

If you're interested in participating in this challenge, sign in to the Linky below. You may sign up at any time of the year!

*****PLEASE NOTE: This linky is to sign up for the challenge only, not to post reviews. Please post your reviews (with direct URL) on the Review Linky. Links to reviews on the sign up page will be deleted.*****

*****SECOND NOTE: The original Linky is now closed and a new one will be added soon. If you would like to sign up in the meantime, please leave your link in comments.******

Feel free to use either of the buttons above!

Maybe I should know this-but who is the woman in the badge-I will for sure sign up

Amanda said...

Ah, I should have said. It's Colette! I realize it's an older picture of her than one normally sees, but I couldn't find a good one for a button in the younger, more common photos.

Colette-I just ordered her complete short stories (in translation) from the Book Depository -great choice-

I'm game! This is my first time here, but I'm sure I'm in good company! :)

I'm in--and my goal will be to talk about the GLBT connections of ancient literature as I hit those books in my reading project. Thanks for organizing!

A totally new challenge for me, but there are so many wonderful authors that I'm sure I can combine it some other challenges I'm looking forward to in 2011!

Hello,
I really dont know much about this challenge. Pls do tell me about GLBT book.
Thanks

Amanda said...

It's a very simple challenge. The book's content must be about GLBT topics, or the author must be GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender). Either way is fine.

I'm definitely in. I've been terrible at posting my reviews to the Mr. Linky this year, but I hope to do better next year. :)

I have no business entering any reading challenges at all. However, that doesn't appear to be stopping me ...

Grilsgood said...

I entered this last year and looked at the books I borrowed all year, but this year I only have to ready one and I will try. I have a book that looks intersting..a mystery

Sally Bibrary said...

I love the self-directed approach to next year's challenge. I've set myself a goal of 15 books, with 5 of those from age groups and genres that I wouldn't normally read.

Kiwi Ivashkov said...

I have never done this challenge before but i will sign up because it sounds interesting..but after i find out..where is the list of books we choose from for the challenge?
I don't understand what type of books will we be reading?
Can somebody explain please...

Amanda said...

There isn't a specific reading list. You choose your own books. As long as they are about GLBT topics or written by GLBT authors, they qualify for the challenge. It's a very design-your-own challenge this year. You can choose to read 5 books or 10 books or 1 book or 20 books, however you wish. It's all up to you. :)

This is the challenge I'm most looking foward to. I'll aim for 15 books, since I have many other challenges to complete as well. Looking foward to your reviews!

I'm excited to join your challenge! I decided to take part after seeing the challenge mentioned on browngirlspeaks.com.

I've signed up for 10 books for this challenge. Pretty excited to get started.

I'm really looking forward to participating also in 2011.

Greetings,

I really had to look to find a GLBT Reading Challenge to Participate in but I am so glad I found you! :)

Amanda said...

Yeah I started looking mid-2009 for one and was surprised not to find any. A little dismayed, actually. Hence this challenge was born. :) Glad you found us!

Officially signing up for the first time, since there's no book number restriction now! Been lurking on the challenge blog for a while :).

Okay, folks, I'm in. Giovanni's Room is on my nightstand as I type this...

This is an awesome idea! I write GLBT fiction so I should be reading it. So far, I have three on my to read list and hope to get at least 5 books in this year alongside the other books I'm reading. Plus I have a new review blog and I don't think the other two read glbt though we all read YA, so I could promote the books more in reviewing them. Definitely signing up for this just to read more.

Beau said...

What a fun idea! My goal is to read at least one LBGTQI-related book each month. :)

Jackie W. said...

Great challenge! I'll go for 15 books to start, as I have no real time for pleasure reading until May. I'll probably focus on YA GLBT books, as I'm participating in a YA challenge.

Buried In Print said...

Coincidentally, like the commenter above, I was aiming for 15 books, but even now, just mid-way through January, I'm wondering if that's not quite challenging enough. I'm aiming to post links at the end of each month and I'm quite looking forward to seeing what other participants are reading. Thanks for hosting!

Beau said...

I finished my first book, right on track :) I'm not sure how or where to post reviews, though, so here's the link for the blog I set up for this book challenge:

Amanda said...

Hi Beau - I left you a comment with instructions on how to post your reviews yesterday - you'd asked on the review post? I'd leave a comment at your post as well except I can't seem to find where to leave comments...you just have to enter your name and URL into the Mr. Linky. :)

Unknown said...

I'm in. I'm shooting for 10 GLBT books this year but I may go over.

Mel u said...

Has anyone read Ronald Firbanks? or better yet no where I can read him on line-he is public domain.

Laura said...

I'm definitely very late to this, but very excited! Plus, I already started a bit without realising it hehe.

Just finished my 3rd book for this challenge...link was posted above.

Amanda said...

Heidi - You'll want to use your direct URL (not the URL to your main page) and post it on the review page. This Linky is just for blogs to sign up for the challenge. I'll go ahead and delete the repeat link since you already posted your blog a few numbers back. :)

Unknown said...

oops did it again...I guess I'm not sure where the review page is.

Amanda said...

No problem! Glad you found the review linky. :)

Mia said...

I have only recently joined a book blog, and am still not 100% sure on how most book challenges work, but I'm happy to sign up for this one!

Anja K. said...

I hope it's not too late to join the challenge, it sounds like fun! I'd like to do 15 books for this one. Any excuse to read more and to discover more great authors! :)

First REview

1. Baxter, Meredith Untied (her coming out)
Who ever knew that Meridith was being abused by that hunk of hers. Or even knew she would find out she was gay. Her book an Oprah award winner, is very good. Her story starts with her mother Nancy Ann Whitney, an actress
wantabee. She felt having 3 children made her old and unwanted in the 5o's when it was all about young, sexy and available. Even as a young child

Meredith was trapped and this is the story of how she became untrapped.

Silsbee said...

Oh, my goodness, I love this challenge. :)

Signing up!

Suko said...

Yay! The requirements have been lessened. I will definitely write a review post--hopefully soon!

Grilsgood said...

my 2nd book

Kahn, E. M. Deep Water
This is Kahn's first novel, but not his last. Within sight of Manhattan most of the time, Gene a committed sailor, and his lover Kevin who he teaches to sail. Gene had a less then stellar career as a journalist and turns to ships carpentry. This is the love story of Gene and Kevin and their love of sailing.
